I’m going to start posting words that get stuck in my head. This happens a lot. Don’t worry, though, I’ll only post the ones that I think are pretty nifty.

Solipsism

From Wikipedia: (pronounced /ˈsɒlɨpsɪzəm/) is the philosophical idea that only one’s own mind is sure to exist. The term comes from Latin solus (alone) and ipse (self). Solipsism is an epistemological or ontological position that knowledge of anything outside one’s own specific mind is unjustified. The external world and other minds cannot be known and might not exist. In the history of philosophy, solipsism has served as a skeptical hypothesis.

The word kept spinning around my brain last night and I couldn’t figure out why. Then today, when I was at the Y reading the book I’ve relegated to the gym, Against a Dark Background, there it was: “solipsist”!
