Optimum Offer Offends

I’ll admit it, I love customer loyalty cards. When one is offered to me for free, I have a really hard time saying “no”. I even go so far as to sign up for email offers, I though I know I’m essentially opting for spam.

Today, I received one of the 2-4/week Shoppers Optimum flyers (Shoppers Drug Mart’s loyalty program). Header: “Get your FREE McDonald’s Gift Card this weekend only!” Ad content: “Shop up an appetite!”

Wait, what? Doesn’t Shoppers promote themselves as a company that supports the health and well-being of its customers? Here’s what their website says (buried in the corporate information):

“As a leader in health and community pharmacy, Shoppers Drug Mart/Pharmaprix is invested in the well-being of Canadians and their communities through our corporate philanthropic and community investment activities. Our past efforts in this area have provided funding for a wide-variety of health-related organizations focused on improving the quality of life for all Canadians…”

Just one look at the articles under Health & Pharmacy or Food & Home tells me that they wouldn’t recommend that I eat at McDonald’s.

Also, “appetite” is the last thing that McDonald’s inspires in me. Just sayin’.
